Coated Sodium Butyrate 70% for Feed – Targeted Support for Gut Barrier and Feeding Efficiency

Calcium stearate-coated Sodium Butyrate 70% from AGREMA Poland — controlled release, gut barrier protection and support for feeding efficiency in poultry, swine and cattle.

The health and integrity of the digestive tract is the foundation of efficient livestock production. Under intensive farming conditions, weaning stress, feed changes and susceptibility to intestinal inflammation remain key challenges. AGREMA Poland’s solution is Sodium Butyrate 70% coated with calcium stearate – an advanced feed additive combining the biological power of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) with controlled, targeted-release technology.

Why does the coated form outperform traditional butyrate?

Unprotected sodium butyrate dissolves quickly in the early sections of the digestive tract (stomach/crop), so it fails to reach the further sections of the small and large intestine. It is also strongly hygroscopic and has a sharp, unpleasant odour.

Microencapsulation with hydrophobic calcium stearate provides:

  • Targeted Delivery: protection of the active substance against premature dissolution in the stomach and effective delivery to the jejunum, ileum and caecum.
  • Excellent technological properties: reduced hygroscopicity, excellent flowability, easy dosing in premixes and feeds, and neutralised butyric acid odour.
  • Palm-Free formula (EUDR-Ready): a coating based on non-palm raw materials, eliminating regulatory risk.
Parameter / feature Regular sodium butyrate (unprotected) AGREMA coated sodium butyrate 70%
Release site Front sections of the digestive tract Distal sections of the small and large intestine
Solubility Immediate Gradual, controlled
Sensory profile Intense, sharp odour Reduced, neutral odour
Stability and flowability High hygroscopicity, caking Excellent flowability and stability in premixes

Biological mechanisms of action (Gut Barrier & Performance)

  1. Strengthening the gut barrier (Tight Junctions): stimulates expression of tight-junction proteins (claudin-1, occludin, ZO-1), preventing so-called leaky gut syndrome.
  2. Intestinal villus development: increases villus height and the favourable villus height : crypt depth ratio, enlarging the intestine’s absorptive surface and improving nutrient uptake.
  3. Mucosal protection (Mucus Barrier): increases the number of goblet cells and mucin production (MUC2), forming a natural mechanical barrier against pathogens.
  4. Microbiota modulation and anti-inflammatory action: supports the balance of beneficial bacterial flora, natural SCFA synthesis, and lowers inflammation markers, promoting anti-inflammatory cytokines (including IL-10).

Main areas of application

  • Weaned piglets: protection against villus atrophy, reduced mortality, improved feed intake and litter uniformity.
  • Broilers (especially the starter phase): intensive digestive tract development, improved FCR and ADG.
  • Layers and turkeys: microbiota stabilisation, improved mucosal immunity and extended laying period.
  • Calves: support for digestive tract development during the critical transition from liquid feeding to solid feed.
